we build stuff.
Jolin is a music technology brand specialized in sound art installations and modular synthesizers led by Federico Intrisano - hardware designer and musician.
The workshop is based in Como, Italy.
The Lab
In 2018, "Jolin Lab" came to life in Federico's garage. There, alongside Pedro Ferragut - software engineer, a first oscillator on a breadboard was born. Using only a handful of components sourced from a local store, they watched a circuit transform into sound. An electrifying, almost magical sensation that remains the driving force behind every Jolin design.
As the project progressed through the years, it embraced scientific rigor and artistic excellence, supported by Marco Zoppi - composer and sound designer, Giacomo Tombolan - electronic engineer, and Mihaela Costisanu - painter and visual designer. Together, they engage in dynamic daily peer reviews, sharing knowledge and validating projects to drive innovative sound exploration and achieve technical excellence.
The Approach
Jolin takes a meticulous, boutique approach to audio electronics. Each instrument is crafted using the finest components available on the market, selected specifically to guarantee optimal performance, quality, and longevity. Before reaching the hands of a musician, every unit undergoes individual assembly and rigorous testing.
We design intentionally, carefully considering availability to meet ongoing demand while ensuring that each instrument fulfills a unique sonic need.
Installations & Community
Beyond the synthesizer, Jolin explores the relationship between humans, nature, and technology through installations like Stellaria — a robotic flower that reflects on our evolving ecosystem. Active in the local scene, we are regular participants in events hosted by collectives such as Milano Modulare and Cosmonaut Tapes. Our commitment to the global community is demonstrated by a consistent presence at international fairs, including Machina Bristronica (Bristol), Modular Day (Barcelona), and Superbooth (Berlin).
Workshops & DIY Spirit
Jolin supports a DIY mindset by offering hands-on workshops. Whether you are an absolute beginner or a seasoned electronic engineer eager to explore analog components and integrated circuits, our sessions offer a balance of creative discovery and technical skill-building. Each workshop focuses on the assembly of unique, original Jolin designs, with guidance tailored to all levels of expertise.
Collaborators
Jolin works with artists and creators to push its instruments through different musical perspectives.
We are grateful to collaborate with: Robin Vincent, kaximia, Andrew Huang, BRiES, Quincas Moreira, Channel 37, Alvaro Küper, Blunted Spaghetti.
Looking Ahead
Jolin continues to explore the interaction between humans and machines through the kaleidoscope of modular synthesizers. Here, expressions and sounds once thought impossible find their voice.
